When Virgil Abloh reimagined the Nike Air More Uptempo for his “Off-White” collaboration, he didn’t just reissue a classic; he deconstructed a cultural artifact. Originally released in 1996, the Uptempo’s chunky silhouette and oversized “AIR” lettering were synonymous with 90s basketball bravado. Abloh’s 2017 take, part of “The Ten” collection, stripped away that era’s gloss. He replaced the full-length Air-Sole unit with a more minimal, exposed foam midsole, while the iconic lettering was halved, reading only “AIR” on one side and left as a ghosted outline on the other. The signature Off-White zip-tie, bright orange tab, and Helvetica text detailing (“SHOELACES”) transformed the shoe into a conceptual art piece.
